Work Record 2

Shoot 2

Plan for the shoot

I am going to continue with the idea of finding different places to the normal.

Location: 'The City' + Southwalk

The reason for this location is because there are the brand new skyscrapers and this will be good for the different lines that i am going to continue from my last work record. Advantages within engineering have allowed the buildings to get taller and so i know i can find some good vertical lines with in 'The City'. However in the city there are still also the older style buildings which i think will create an interesting contrast as well as obtain some of the other different types of lines. Another theme that emerged from my last shoot was movement through the photo and i think i am also going to look for that within this shoot as well.

Research influence

David Gutierrez - series 'VERTICAL'

This photo is of somewhere in 'The City' of London, UK and has been manipulated in order to create the collage of these different buildings. The building on the bottom left i do know as the Loyds building when they put all the infrastructure on the outside of the building in order to use all the floor space. There lines within the photo they are vertical lines which do make you feel tiny as you can follow the building into the middle of the photo. The building in the middle at the bottom is the tallest an does seem to the on looker to go on forever.

series 'GREYSCALE'

( "Stripes" King's Cross St. Pancreas Station, London, UK)

This photo was taken so against a reflective surface as a result creates the effect of a corridor on the opposite side. The use of curves in the photo pulls you into the photo and makes you wonder whats down and around the curve. I also like how he had made the the photo in Black and White as it allows the definition to really draw you in as well as make the reflection more noticeable. The strip effect forms and implied line and creates the thought of movement as it naturally gets your eye to follow the curves.

Image Bank ( 3-5 )

This image has been added as it is the stereotypical photo you will get of London when you type in images for 'The City' of London. The reason why this was added as i wanted to show the type of photo i was not going to be looking for. This photo however did have the contrast in builds that i do want to try and capture.

This photo is more like the photo i want to take where you are on street level. In the photo the whole photo has been distorted. This has most likely been taken using a wide lens in order to create that distortion. For the photos i want to take i am planing on taking photos without distortion. What i like about the image though is the fact that you have the juxtaposition of the old and new buildings.

This street view is more like the photo im looking to take where there is no distortion. The use of the road curving through the photo allows the viewer to 'walk' through the image with there eyes in between the building and looking at them as they go through.

In this photo i found that the staggered buildings really invited the idea of depth of field. The juxtaposition of the older and shorter buildings with the high contrast of the newer and much taller buildings behind. Have the effect of the feeling of grandeur due to the height and multiple vertical lines. I like how the idea of movement stilled applied as the foreground building isn't straight and therefore allows the thought of just walking around it to get closer to the taller buildings as curiously invites the idea of how tall?

In this photo there are two new built skyscrapers. The angle for this photo was to enhance the  vertical lines shown and as a result the eye of the viewer is drawn in and up the buildings. Due to the height the buildings can feel intimidating and like they are moving towards you if you look at it to long. I really like the reflection in the glass of the sky and clouds as it stands out more making them pull your eyes into the sky.

In this photo there is juxtaposition between the really old, tiny looking church compared to the giant blue, newer building behind. The green bikes in the foreground pull in the focus in the photo as they are really colourful against a otherwise plain looking mid-ground to the blue building in the background. The use of vertical lines here was to use the different stages of height in the buildings to pull in the viewer.

These first three photos were influenced by David Gutierrez - series 'VERTICAL'.

In this photo the use of vertical lines is in the the buildings either side which create the idea of direction as well as the idea that you can step into the photo and walk now the created path. This implies movement through the eye moving down the path into the light at the end. The vertical line can form the feeling of intimidation as its closing in and constricting the view.

In the final photo the vertical lines are use along with the gold lights and shop fronts to form the feeling of grandeur. This is framing the flower stall which forces the eyes to go up the buildings instead of down the narrow corridor to the dark blue door. However as the flowers bring in colour they also bring in mystery as curiosity wants to know what is behind.

I really like this photo as all the builds have vertical lines that really standout due to them having different colours. I like the idea of movement through the photo as your eye is taken into the photo pillar by pillar to the curve of the blue door. When editing through i am going to crop out the two man at the left hand side as i think that they disrupt this effect.

Needs improvement

For this photo the idea was i get the outside of this building which has all the services around the outside of the building instead of being contained within it. As well as this as i took the photo someone walked in front of the camera and as a result their head got in the photo. If i was to retake i would move closer to the building in order to get a best angle.

This photo wasn't taken at the right angle as there isn't any idea of movement and nothing for the eyes to follow. The photo also has true depth as the foreground of the white fencing and the bike blend straight into the background creating no contrast.

This last photo was to under exposed and as a result you couldn't see the vertical lines of the building well. This meant that the effect that they created couldn't be seen however i did retake this photo correcting this mistake photo 20191002_143341.jpg .

AO2: Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops.

I used my Nikon D3100,

The most common settings i used were:
ISO 200
F stop 15
Shutter Speed 1/125
Set to Manual and Manual focus

However these had to change continuously as i went from outside to undercover as well as sun to cloud and vise versa.

AO1: Develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations informed by contextual and other source, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding

For all my photos i decided to manipulate them using a computer and the program Photoshop in order to enhance them and certain features within. For all my photos i used the healing brush tool, Brightness and contrast tool and the Hue and Saturation.

This is the only photo that got cropped. This was because of the people that were on the left hand side and they didn't work with the image is was trying to create.

I then used the healing brush tool in order to remove blemishes and gum on the pavement

Lastly i used the Brightness and Contrast and Hue and Saturation in order to sharpen and the main focus with in the photos.

Screenshots taken using the Snipping tool

AO4: Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, make connections between visual and other elements.

Progression

In this shoot i really enjoyed working with vertical lines in this shoot and seeing the different effects brought to the photos because of them. This shoot was heavily influenced by David Gutierrez - series 'VERTICAL' and how he gets your eye to follow the flow of the building.

As a result i wanted to return back to 'The City' in my next shoot as i think after looking how i would photograph other things. I think that looking at more traditionally known things in London could be interesting. This wouldn't include due to location: Elizabeth Tower, Houses of Parliament, London Eye. However i want to keep the idea of movement that i have created in my work so i need to continue looking at lines. Instead of computer manipulation i may look at Steven Irwin who adds paint on to his photos for a physical manipulation. This could create some very different effects and could in itself imply movement. I think this idea would be really interesting to explore.

What i am looking for:
- Movement through the use of the physical manipulation in order to change how the tourist attractions can be manipulated so the photos are unlike the 'normal'.
